Halftime Update

With seven weeks down and six to go, it is a good time to take stock of what has happened in the first half of the Major League Lock Club's third season.  Our current leader is Uncle PJ at 20 units.  5 Strong Football (formerly CDes/Bink) is seven units behind him with 13.  Rounding out the money spots, The King has 10 units.  At 2 units (due to a tie-breaker), Uncle Money would win Closest to Zero if the season ended today.  As a group, we have gone 202-261-20 for a combined total of -207 units.  The highest ranked newcomer is Uncle Money at 7th place.  Newcomers also occupy seven of the bottom nine spots, highlighted by Lights Out's -36 units.

Best College Record: 5-2 (Captain, Dommie Kosar, Uncle PJ)
Most College Units Won: 13 (Uncle PJ)
Worst College Record: 1-6 (Edge)
Least College Units Won: -22 (Whole F'n Show)

Best NFL Day Record: 4-2-1 (5 Strong Football)
Most NFL Day Units Won: 15 (5 Strong Football)
Worst NFL Day Record: 1-6 (Easy Money, Captain)
Least NFL Day Units Won: -24 (Captain)

Best Prime Time Record: 5-2 (Str8 Cash Homie, KOLY)
Most Prime Time Units Won: 9 (Roy Betterman)
Worst Prime Time Record: 1-6 (Achilles)
Least Prime Time Units Won: -17 (Achilles)

Longest Winning Streak: 5 (Golf Coach, Reaper)
Longest Losing Streak: 7 (The TOMizzle, Cheesesteak)

Some All-Time Records have changed hands as well.  Officially, these will not be updated until the end of the season as the process can quickly turn into a nightmare for me.  That said, these would be the new record holders were the season to end today:

Str8 Cash Homie moves 3-0 lifetime on College Vapors
5 Strong Football (19) Most NFL Day Wins
5 Strong Football (29) Most NFL Day Units Won
Achilles (10-22-1) Most Prime Time Losses
Achilles (-36) Most Prime Time Units Lost
Uncle PJ (5) ties for Most 3-0 Weeks
The Whole F'n Show (23-36-1) Worst Winning Percentage (>1 season played)
5 Strong Football (33) Most Units Won
Edge (34.5) Largest NFL Day Cover

Guess Who's Back

The Curse of First claims another victim.  After losing the NFL day game by the hook (a game where KC had not one but two opportunities to cover in the closing minutes), I took another L in that abortion of a Sunday Night contest.  My misery was only surpassed by the joy of my brother-in-law.  Uncle PJ managed to earn his SECOND +15 unit week of the year, winning comfortably in each of his games.  It was good enough to get him to 20 units (our largest total of the year thus far).  Currently, he is enjoying a seven point lead over second place 5 Strong Football (who also went 3-0).

Week Seven was a week of extremes around the Major League Lock Club.  Obviously, Uncle PJ and 5 Strong managed to go 3-0.  Five folks managed to earn the Golden Sombrero.  Bam Bam is rocking that bad boy for the second time.  Achilles ran his loss streak to five.  The Whole F'n Show sits at four.  Reaper and Lights Out are 0-4-1 over their last five contests as well.  Let me not gloss over Lights Out's weekend.  His -10 unit performance means he is sitting at -36.  It would appear to be a Vapor Lock that he will "best" Golf Coach's mark for futility.  He is basically the Yoan Moncada of the MLLC.  That jump from the minors (Steve Wilson's league) to the Majors is harder than it looks.  On the whole, we enjoyed the rare net positive week finishing at +14.

In other news, the High Risers were Roy Betterman and Golf Coach.  Both are at least 30 units out of first, but they are slowly working their way through the pack of mediocrity that resides between -10 and -30 units.  The Free Faller award goes to Bam Bam who dropped 7 spots this week.  It's getting close to the time where people need to start thinking about playing for Closest to Zero.  When you first start really contemplating that, you might feel a slight sting.  That's pride f***ing with you.  F*** pride.  Pride only hurts; it never helps.

Paga-NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Things were looking good for about half of the MLLC.  The Colts were in possession of a 14 point lead with a little less than four minutes to go.  Fast forward thirty minutes, and you have an absolutely mind-boggling, come from ahead push.  Well, truthfully, it wasn't mind-boggling to any of the Colts fans among us.  Just another example how the MLLC can pick a winner about as well as our coked-up owner can pick a GM.

Saturday highlights were few and far between.  Notre Dame still sucks.  Both Troy and Clemson failed to cover for The Whole F'n Show and Golf Coach's attempts respectively for a Vapor.  Nebraska managed the backdoor cover thanks to the ineptitude of another coach in my home state.  Sunday's day games were a mixed bag as well.  Oakland totally screwed over Str8 Cash Homie, Captain (with a Vapor), Achilles, Gator, and Bam Bam.  The New England Patriots pounded their opponent into oblivion again much to the voyeuristic pleasure of The Whole F'n Show and Edge (both had Vapor locks in play).  Quite frankly, if you still have an NFL Vapor left, you would be an idiot to not play it on the Pats.  Oh yeah, the Cardinals covered against an FCS squad last night.

We had two people go undefeated.  Roy Betterman ran his consecutive win streak to four with a perfect 3-0 week.  The TOMizzle clawed back towards the positive side with a 2-0-1 week himself.  J Brown's Mom also went 2-0-1.  Despite losing 2 units via penalty, s/he still managed to gain 4 units.  Easy Money donned the Tim Tebow Golden Sombrero with an 0-3 week.  Cheesesteak hit the halfway mark in his pursuit of wrestling the consecutive futility mark from Dommie Kosar (he's 0-6 over the last two weeks). Speaking of six consecutive losses, Golf Coach finally got off of the snide with an Arizona cover late Monday night.  Not gonna lie, my heart dropped a little when I saw our picks matched up!

It was a big week for the Commish.  I slipped past Meehoe to grab the top spot with 10 units.  In the process, I also moved into the lead for all-time units.  Gator is still holding on to the record for most wins at 51 to my 50 and 5 Strong Football's 49.  The High Riser for the week was The TOMizzle who climbed five spots into 8th and well within striking distance of the top.  Golf Coach was our Free Faller as he dropped six spots from 12th into 18th.  Gator and Lights Out continued their battle for last with Gator coming out on "top" this week.  He is sitting at -31, while Lights Out is at -26.  For those of you following this race, Golf Coach was at -24 after Week 6 last year in his march to a record low -43.

MLLC, Stay Off the Drugs

Mr. McDowell was not impressed by our performance Sunday night.  The TOMizzle was the only one who enjoyed a most ripping cover when the Giants of New York took on the Packers of Green Bay.  Had only the Packers kicked an oblong ball made of pigskin through a big H, the rest of us would have covered.

On the whole, this was a terrible week for the MLLC, but that seems to be the case almost every week.  Together, we went 27-40-2 for -28 units.  Edge led the charge with a perfect 0 for 3, -15 unit week.  He wasn't alone in his winless performance.  His son-in-law and Golf Coach also earned the golden sombrero.  JBrown's Mom narrowly avoided losing all three on the strength of a college push.   The lone bright spot was Reaper.  He was our first member in two weeks to go 3-0.  It will be interesting to see how being surrounded by Ganga smokers all week in the Caribbean will affect his abilities.

There were some other interesting developments.  Dommie Kosar, Uncle PJ, and Reaper narrowly gained a third of the largest College Cover when Michigan put down a truly biblical ass-whipping on the Rutgers Chris Christies.  The NFL day games provided some drama as T-$ battled it out with 5 Strong Football and The King for the largest NFL Day Vapor Cover.  Ultimately, the Vikings covered by just a smidge more than TB12, regaining T-$ a share of that sweet, sweet bonus pie.

In other Vapor news, both Dommie Kosar and Roy Betterman narrowly missed adding their names to All Time leader boards.  Dommie just missed becoming the first person in two years to go a perfect 3-0 on Vapors.  Currently, Meehoe, T-$, and 5 Strong Football are each sitting at 2-0.  Roy Betterman avoided the disgrace of the perfect 0-3 Vapor run when Tampa Bay narrowly defeated a Cam-less Panther squad last night.  That accomplishment has only been achieved one time before.  Well, before Sunday.  Let me send a special congratulations out to JBrown's Mom for being the first person in two years to miss all three of the picks they felt strongest about - truly Wall of Shame worthy.

Week 5 News and Notes

Curse of First strikes again - Meehoe replaces Dommie Kosar at the top of the leaderboard.
3-0 - Reaper
0-3 - Edge, Cheesesteak, Golf Coach (0-2-1 - JBrown's Mom)
Falling Fast - Golf Coach dropped 8 spots
High Riser - Meehoe, 5 Strong Football and Uncle PJ all jumped 7 spots

Wet 'N Wild

Fellas, things have been pretty crazy around the Wilson household as we prepare for our first vacation in almost six years (and the first for our youngest two members).  With that being the case, today's post will be pretty succinct.  Currently, Notre Dame +2.5 are slogging it out with the Wolfpack on ABC.  Thanks to a block, scoop, and score, things are not looking good for the Irish.  Meehoe, Easy Money, and Cheesesteak are all hoping God's favorites will pull through.

We have six games starting between 3 and 3:30.  The big one for the MLLC is Houston -17 vs Navy on CBSS.  5 Strong Football, Achilles, Gator, and Lights Out are all riding the favorite.  At the same time, Akron -7.5 will face the Redskins on ESPN 3.  Captain likes the Zips in this one.  At 3:30, Buffalo +1.5 (T-$) will face Kent State on ESPN 3.  There is not much to say about either of these brutal contests.  Half of 5 Strong Football will be in attendance at their first IU game when they face Ohio State -29 on ESPN.  Both The TOMizzle and Edge have the Buckeyes - Edge having issued a Vapor Lock.  The King and JBrown's Mom are rolling with the dogs when Tennessee +7 takes on Texas A&M on CBS.  Rounding out the 3:30 action, Sparty -6 will try to bounce back from their devastating loss at the hands of the Hurrying Hoosiers when they face BYU on ABC.  Golf Coach believes in them.

At 6:30, Western Michigan -19.5 will face the Ball State killers, Northern Illinois, on CBSS.  Both Str8 Cash Homie and Uncle Money like the Broncos.  Thirty minutes later, Louisiana-Monroe -5 faces a hapless Idaho squad on ESPN 3.  Idaho's biggest hater, The Whole F'n Show, will once again be cheering against them.  ESPN 2 will be televising the battle between Michigan -28 and Rutgers.  Our leader, Dommie Kosar, Uncle PJ, and Reaper will all be pulling for the Maize and Blue to "Cover. That. Spread!"  ESPN will be featuring KOLY's Crimson Tide -14 as they face Arkansas.  At 8, Miami -3 will kickoff against the Fighting Snoop Minnises on ABC.  Bam Bam is all over The U.  Finally, Stanford -7.5 faces Washington State on ESPN.  Roy Betterman has the Trees.

One Third of the Way There

After our College Picks on Saturday, we will officially be at the 1/3 mark of the season.  Let us recap the successes and surprises of the season so far:

Let's begin with the high notes.  After finishing in 10th the year before, Dommie Kosar finds himself sitting atop the standings.  He achieved this largely by going 2 for 2 on Vapor Locks.  Golf Coach had the worst season ever last year, but currently finds himself sitting in fourth - only six units out of the lead.  Achilles is also enjoying a great amount of success after a rough year last year.  He is currently in fifth, well within striking distance.

It hasn't been all smiles and high fives.  Just ask Gator.  He came in as both the defending champion and all-time units leader.  A 3-9 (-27 unit) start seemed an impossibility, but, alas, here we are.  The good news is my guy did go 2-1 this past week.  After a storied career in a minor league lock club, Lights Out came into the season an early favorite with huge expectations.  No one could have foreseen a 4-7-1 start where two Vapors were lost.  All of this has left the toughest guy in the league sitting in last at -28 units.  Speaking of new guys, most of them have sucked as well.  Bam Bam, Easy Money, Roy Betterman, J Brown's Mom, and Reaper are all well into the bottom of the standings.  Thanks for donating, fellas.

As for Week 4, there are a few things worth mentioning.  No one went 3-0 or 0-3.  After climbing nine spots to the top of the leader board in Week 3, Meehoe fell 7 spots to 8th.  This was the largest drop of the week.  Dommie Kosar managed to replace Meehoe at the top after climbing 11 spots on the strength of his second correct Vapor pick.  Currently, Uncle Money (8 units, second place) has the best record at 7-5.  Captain is the only person who has yet to miss a pick in any particular category, starting off 4-0 in Prime Time Games.  Unfortunately, there are several people who have yet to win a pick in a category or another.  I will let you know as this last story plays out.

Down Goes Sparty!

HOO, HOO, HOO, HOOSIERS! The mighty Cream and Crimson pulled off a major upset victory at home yesterday, shocking the world and upsetting the Major League Lock Club.  While they tried like hell to be IU, they finally managed to bring home the W on a partially blocked 20 yard field goal.  This meant bad news for Easy Money, who lost an 11 unit vapor. He wasn't alone, as Edge and JBrown's Mom also backed the wrong horse.  The end of this game dovetailed nicely into the final moments of Louisville vs Clemson.  It looked as if L. Jackson was going to get the job done, but both the cover and victory ended up eluding him.  That was good news for The King and bad news for Cheesesteak and KOLY.

Sparty wasn't the only one to cost someone a Vapor Lock.  The Cardinals of Ball State went down in flames to Northern Illinois, taking two Alum with them.  Captain lost 4 units while Reaper swallowed the 11 unit hit.  Even Golf Coach missed on this one.  Lights Out went big on Florida State, dropping a 10 spot as they failed to cover as well.

As noted earlier, Dommie Kosar was the only one of the four Vapors in play on Saturday to come through.  Not only did it move him into first position, he came into today with a six unit lead.  This was due to everyone in the top nine picking a loser.  Hats off to Achilles, The King, The Whole F'n Show, Gator, and Roy Betterman for rounding out our Week 4 Saturday winners.

Seen above is a field level shot from today's NFL contest in London.  The Colts' typical BS slow start led to five folks eating a pile for Sunday brunch.  Captain, Uncle PJ, Bam Bam, Roy Betterman, and KOLY all missed on this one.

NFL Day Game Action

1:00
Houston -5 (Golf Coach) vs Tennessee
New England -5.5 (T-$, 5 Strong Football, The King, Edge) vs Buffalo (Dommie Kosar)

Another Arni's Saturday

Dateline:  Arni's, October 1, 2016 15:16

As I type this message, Dommie Kosar sits atop of the MLLC.  He won big on an 11 unit wager on O-H-I-O State who beat a hapless Rutgers team in Columbus.  There are currently three other games with action on them finishing up right now.  5 Strong Football is holding back tears as the East Carolina Pirates look as if they will fall the perennial MLLC spoiler, UCF.  The TOMizzle may be in the same boat with Texas, but there is still some time left.  Finally, Gator and Roy Betterman are almost assuredly good with Notre Dame leading well beyond the spread midway through the fourth.

There are a whole slew of MLLC games kicking off at 3:30.  The biggest is Florida State -11 vs North Carolina on ESPN.  Lights Out is trying to reverse his early trend by using his Vapor Lock on the 'Noles.  A little to the north, the Ball State Cardinals -4 will be facing Northern Illinois in this classic MAC matchup (on ESPN 3).  Reaper liked his alma mater enough to use his College Vapor on them.  Captain and Golf Coach like the Cardinals' chances as well.  Bam Bam took a huge 'dog in Louisiana Monroe +33 vs Auburn on the SEC Network.  Achilles will be sipping on some whiskey as he hopes Wisky +10.5 can keep it close in Ann  Arbor on ABC.  Str8 Cash Homie and Mr. 15 Units (Uncle PJ) will be keeping an eye on ESPN 2 to see if the Cornhuskers -21 can do up the Fighting Illini be the appropriate number.  Our leader coming into the week (Meehoe) and Uncle Money will be tuned into CBS to see if the house that Tee Majors built -3.5 can scratch out a win over UGA. Finally, T-$ will try to find the ACC Network in an effort to see his Deacon Demons +11 battle the NWO Wolfpack.

At 5;00, the men of Troy -14 will host Idaho on ESPN 3.  The Whole F'n Show hates potatoes and loves him some men, so he bet accordingly.  The two biggest games on a national level kick off at 8:00.  On ABC, the Louisville Cardinals -2 (Cheesesteak, KOLY) will face the Clemson Tigers (The King).  Simultaneously, Sparty -6.5 will be doing battle against perennial powerhouse Indiana in Bloomington.  Edge and JBrown's Mom like Sparty.  Easy Money REALLY likes Sparty, throwing his Vapor behind them.

Good luck everyone.
